Imgur, the popular image hosting service, has updated its search tool to help users identify viral images quickly. The new image tagging, advanced search feature transforms Imgur from just an image uploading and sharing site to a place where users can find the web’s hottest images.
The new tool allows users to add a tag to an image at the time of uploading. What’s more, anyone can add new tags and vote on how relevant the existing tags are. The new tagging and search tool lets you create your own personalized image gallery by browsing through categories of viral images which are updated in real time.
These custom galleries can also be used to filter specific tags from your search. For example, if you missed the last episode of your favorite show you can filter out anything related to it while you are browsing through the day’s collection of viral memes. Users can also search for images by file type, size and title.
1.5 million images are uploaded on Imgur every day and the site gets more than 5 billion page views from more than 130 million unique visitors every month. However, a major part of this traffic constitutes people sharing images on social networking sites or community news sharing sites like Reddit.
The new tool will not only give users a vivid picture of where a particular picture is getting popular, what is drawing the attention of specific groups and what is working and what’s not.
